Description
This is a prized cooker that makes a beautiful creamy puree, and one of the best baked apples. Widely grown in Victorian times, it was raised by Richard Dumeller, a farmer near Ashby-de-la-Zouche in Leicestershire and was said to be Queen Victoria’s favourite apple! It was superseded by Bramley in the early 1900s, though many old trees still exist. The fruit can keep until May when traditionally it was used for mincemeat in May Day pies. Also known as Wellington, it was renamed in 1820.
