Description
Stoke Red makes an excellent, balanced, bittersharp juice in the same class as the famed Kingston Black. It was commonly planted in orchards across cider-making regions from the 1930s, having been raised at Rodney Stoke in Somerset at the turn of the century. The trees themselves have a rather poor natural shape, and cropping can become biennial, but crops are large and the quality of the juice is first rate. It makes a good choice for the organic grower as Stoke Red has good overall disease resistance, and it is notable for its tolerance to shade. As a late variety apples mature in the second half of November.
